Plot Summary of The Butcher's Dog
"This is the retelling of true events.
Set in the Russian Revolution the tale is as much about personal survival as it is war.
Mikhail is orphaned in Moscow so takes to the road to escape the guns. Farmers Ivan and Anna rescue him. He grows up, falls in love with Anna and makes love to her. There is a fierce fight where Mikhail kills her husband, Ivan. Mikhail takes to the road again eventually arriving in Canada where he becomes a rum-running pirate between Victoria and Seattle. The time is during prohibition.
There is an old Russian fable about a dog that is slaughtered by starving villagers who think that the butcher is keeping food from them. Ivan is left dying in the woods just like the butcher's dog. The image haunts Mikhail for the rest of his life as he tries to find Anna."
