"Lettice Knollys is Queen Elizabeth's cousin on her mother's side. Introduced to court at a very young age, her taste for the high life overtakes her and greed and jealousy of the Queen's relationship with Robert Dudley, the wild courtier and master of horse, is her running obsession. Banished by the Queen for indiscreet behaviour and a sharp tongue, Lettice marries but tires of the marriage when it fails to live up to her imagined 'ideal' life with Robert, Earl of Leicester. By creating a facade of innocence Lettice is able to return to court and the love triangle is reinstated. Outliving the Queen and Robert, Lettice only has her thoughts to comfort her as an old woman living in a Staffordshire village. "
