Imogen Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Imogen

Imogen is a Librarian in a quiet village where her father is the vicar. Tennis star Nicky Beresford comes to town on a charity tennis tour and picks Imogen out of the crowd as his next conquest. Nicky is a rising tennis star, playing in a small charity match to improve his reputation after a scandal with another players wife. After the match he is invited to dinner by the vicar, and begins his attempts to get the vicars daughter, Imogen, in to bed. These attempts are all thwarted, and Nicky eventually decides the only option is to take Imogen away from her parents on holiday.

He manages to get permission from her parents by arranging to go away with two other couples; the beautiful Cable and her boyfriend Matt who is a renowned journalist. Nicky continues to fail in his attempts to bed Imogen, and becomes increasingly irritated, flirting more and more with Cable. Imogen feels frumpy and out of place; her clothes aren't right and she feels overweight beside the other two women.

Matt takes pity on Imogen, and takes her shopping, giving her a makeover and new, flattering clothes, and Imogen begins to fall for him as he is so kind to her.

One day Imogen returns unexpectedly to the hotel and finds Nicky and Cable together, she runs off alone and walks along the beach, straying onto private property and not realising. She sees a young child fall into the water, his nanny is not paying attention so Imogen saves him. The child turns out to belong to a famous reclusive couple that Matt has been trying to get an interview with for a very long time, they agree to an interview to thank Imogen for saving their child.

AS Matt becomes more immune to Cable's constant flirting and tantrums he realises how much he enjoys Imogen's company, and when Cable eventually runs off with a film producer, and Nicky with a blonde model, Matt and Imogen realise that they are not upset at all and fall into each other's arms.
Best part of story, including ending: I like Matt and Imogens growing relationship, the contrast between his cynicism and her innocent naievety

Best scene in story: I love the scene where Matt treats Imogen to a make over, it's a happy, well written scene

Opinion about the main character: I like Imogens resilience, and her determination to stay positive.
