Roberto "Sandy" Sanchez, a retired Baltimore police detective, has returned to investigative work after suffering the death of his wife and as well as a failed business. As a contract worker rather than a member of the police force, he investigates cold cases. He is intrigued by the case of Felix Brewer, who disappeared in the 1970s, while under police investigation for running illegal businesses. Exactly ten years after Brewer's disappearance, his mistress also disappeared. Her body was found several years later in a park, but the death remains unsolved.

Best part of story, including ending:
The story shifts time periods, from the time of Brewer's disappearance to the early 1960s romance between him and his wife, to the present day investigation as well as points in between.
Best scene in story:
The scene where one of Felix Brewer's daughters, now grown up, confronts her father's former mistress is very vividly written and intriguing.
Opinion about the main character:
I enjoyed the fact that Sandy, the investigator, has his own complicated personal history.
