" E. Howard Hunt was one of the most intriguing characters of the Watergate scandal. He was a World War Two veteran and a CIA agent who, along with G. Gordon Liddy and others, was one of the "plumbers" so-called because they had been charged by President Nixon with "fixing leaks". The plumbers participated in the break-in at the Watergate Hotel. During the administration of President John F. Kennedy, he had helped plan the Bay of Pigs invasion, and he was accused of being involved in President Kennedy's assassination. Hunt would be convicted of burglary, wiretapping, and conspiracy, and he would serve 33 months in prison.
E. Howard Hunt was born on October 9, 1918 in Hamburg, New York. He graduated from Brown University in 1940, and served in the Navy, and Air Force. Hunt also wrote several spy novels under various pen names. Hunt joined the CIA in 1949, becoming station chief in Mexico City in 1950. During his time in the CIA, Hunt devised several plans to overthrow leaders of foreign countries, such as Jacobo Arbenz, the president of Guatemala, who were seen as threats to American interests. Hunt would become disillusioned by what he felt was President Kennedy's lack of courage in overthrowing Fidel Castro's regime in Cuba, and the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion would damage his promising career.
After his conviction in the Watergate break-in, Hunt would become angry that he had to go to prison for 33 months, while President Nixon was allowed to get off. "
