Not knowing how to proceed, Odd goes to speak with the Mother Superior. This conversation draws his attention to a man who is a major benefactor of the hospital and monastery. Brother John Heinman, a reclusive researcher, describes the work he is currently doing and Odd asks if these experiments could endanger the children.

Odd goes back out into the snow. He is chased by something or someone. This pursuit by an unidentified entity convinces Odd that the children should be relocated.
