| Plot Summary of Five Past Midnight in Bhopal |
" Union Carbide was a huge, well-intentioned American chemical corporation that developed a miracle pesticide that had the potential to eliminate world famine. India was in great need of increasing its food production for an often hungry population, and this new pesticide seemed to be the answer to their dreams. In the Indian city of Bhopal, Union Carbide built a giant plant to process MIC and was welcomed as a savior by the Indian people.
But at five past midnight on December 3, 1984, toxic gas leaked from the Carbide plant into the night air and was blown into the heavily populated city with the poorest people taking the brunt of it. By dawn, over half-million Bhopalis would be poisoned, and as many as thirty thousand would die."
