"Karadur Atani, the Golden Dragon of Chinguara, survivor of his fathers cruelty and madness and his brother's jealousy and betrayal in attempting to wrest the right to rule from him, has grown through all these and other trials and now rules Dragon Keep. He is just, fair, eating with his men and among his people. He learns to keep his dragon-like abilities to burn and kill from reactively striking out at those people around him and especially those who trust him. Karadur is of dragon blood and transforms into a golden warrior, who soars high, and speeds across the land, investigating and keeping watch. The people he rules do not tempt him, for when he does transform, his fire burns without mercy. In time, he meets Maia Unamira, the sister of a young outlaw, and what they begin their relationship and feelings grows into a heated love beyond either's ability to resist.
The politics rulers in nearby places threatens the peace he has developed and watched over. Through his gifted informers, Karadur hears of Maia's brother's capture by Marion diSorvinoa a mean hearted, cruel ruler. With wisdom Karadur rescues her outlaw brother from diSorvino, and brings Treion to his castle and judges him for his outlaw deeds. This judgment requires cutting off Treion's arm and changing his name to Taran (wanderer). Karadur gives him the opportunity to choose to learn and grow throughout a year or not. Wisely, Treion chooses to stay with Karadur, working in the kitchen and slowly learning to humble himself, gaining the respect of those he works with and for. Marion diSorvino still determined to have his way pays to have Treion kidnapped by a brutal killer, who kills Treion's friend Edric and Herugin, Karadur's chief officer.
As Karadur finds out what has happened, he transforms into the Dragon; and flies to the guilty ruler's palace. diSorvino arrogantly disrespect Karadur, and in return, Karadur transform's and burns the ruler and all with him; but leaves the town intact; justice. In returning to his castle, Karadur finds out that his 'best friend' has left, begging him not to try to find him. In due time Maia gives birth to their child, naming her Jewel, and brings her to the castle to meet her father. And so the story pauses... "
