"Dick Cheney is vice president of the United States. What many people don't realize is that he's been a political insider for close to 40 years.
Born in Nebraska, he moved with his family to Wyoming while still a child. His dad was a bureaucrat, with the U. S. Soil Service. Cheney went through some wild times as a young man. He was not a very good student at Yale and he got a couple of DWIs. Although of the right age, he did not serve in Vietnam, receiving five draft deferments, apparently based on the fact that he married young and had a child.
Having gone to graduate school in Wyoming, he went to work for the Nixon administration in 1969. After Nixon was forced to resign, Cheney became Gerald Ford's chief of staff, the youngest ever. In the years that followed, he served in Congress for many years. During the first Bush administration, he was Secretary of Defense for four years. He was in support of the senior Bush's decision not to fight all the way into Baghdad, to take out Saddam Hussein, in the first Gulf War. Afterwards, he would go to work in the private sector, most notably for energy company Halliburton. George W. Bush asked him to run on the ticket with him in the 2000 election. Since taking office, he has proven to be an enormously powerful but not very popular vice president.
The authors of this book are long-time observers of the Texas political scene. Their book is a very harsh look at Cheney and especially his actions as vice president. They paint him as extremely secretive, a man who tries to avoid letting the American public know what his office is up to - even to the extent of trying to prevent people from knowing who, exactly, works in his office or what its budget is."
