The woman he is looking for, Dolly, is rumored to have married an Earl, so Lucas decides to put on a faux courtship of the Earl's daughter, Lady Amelia Plume, to discover if her stepmother is the woman he is looking to arrest.

When Lucas declares his intention to court her, Amelia sees it for the ploy it is, and decides to put on a serade of her own.
