| Plot Summary of Skin Deep |
"On the surface Nina Moore looks like a white woman, despite the fact that she is African American. Having moved from Los Angeles to Glendale, Arizona, Nina finds herself experiencing racial identity problems as she is constantly mistaken for white. When Nina can't seem to rid herself of frightening dreams she decides to seek help from a therapist, who advises her to delve into her past to resolve her current issues. Raised in a loving home by her father, Mitchell Moore, a famous jazz musician, and his wife, Evelyn, who is not Nina's biological mother, Nina has always been curious about her origins. Although the details are sketchy, Nina knows that her biological mother was a Caucasian woman who passed away when she was a toddler. The circumstances of her father's affair with her white mother have always been shrouded in secrecy, particularly since her father was married to Evelyn at the time he created Nina. As Nina searches for answers to her birth mother's identity and mysterious death, she crosses paths with Ahmad, a handsome single father who is trying to rebuild his life after being incarcerated for five years for murder. Ahmad himself is trying to deal with issues pertaining to being an African American male in a racist society and the tragic passing of his wife. As family secrets unravel, Nina is forced to rethink her identity.
