Plot Summary of The Turning Tides
"Amy Harrington, a well-brought-up young girl of eighteen in the more affluent area of London, finds she is expecting the child of her boyfriend, Dicky Pritchard. They decide to get married, until she says she wants the wedding to take place as soon as possible. Only then does he reject her as he says he cannot face the shame. Returning home. she is thrown out of her house by her angry father. Their cockney maid Alice Jordan is promptly sacked for standing up for her, and comes to her rescue by taking her back to live with her own family in the much poorer Stepney.

Amy is very upset at finding there is no way back to her parents, brother Henry and sister Kay, and to console herself she finds an ingenious way of getting her own back on her former lover and the father of her unborn child. Alice becomes part of the plan, when a meeting is arranged between her and Dicky. However it goes very wrong, and both families suffer tragedy soon afterwards. When an increasingly desperate Amy finds herself attracted to Alice's elder brother Tom, who works in the docks alongside his father, but he has his misgivings about becoming involved with a girl from a higher social order than him.
