| Plot Summary of Ashes of Roses |
" America...the land of opportunity. Rose Nolan and her family from Ireland have just immigrated to New York, and already her father and her baby brother Joseph are sent back. Heartbroken but determined to go on, Rose and her remaining family members move in with their Uncle Patrick's reluctant wife and daughters.
Rose immediately sets off to find work, unsuccessfully asking for jobs in different stores. She is nearly raped by a rose shop owner, and she is desperate to get money for her family. Things get worse when tensions arise between her uncle's family and the Nolans. Then Rose meets Gussie, a headstrong, outspoken young girl who works at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory and helps find her and her sister Maureen a job there. Little does Rose know that the historical fire of the factory will change her and Maureen's life."
