| Plot Summary of Portrait of Charlotte |

"Charlotte Campion and her husband Charles, who is twenty years older than her, live in the more prosperous part of London and she has almost everything she could ever want. But then Richard Parker, who has just arrived in the city to become a professional artist, is invited to come and paint her portrait. Once she is introduced to him she realises that she is not really in love with her husband, and embarks on a reckless passionate affair with Richard.
Once the portrait is completed, he knows the only way out is for him to abandon any thoughts of studying art in London, despite invitations from more potential patrons which are almost too good to refuse. He returns to his family in the north of England, and tells his family that he wants to join them on the next whaling expedition. Only his mother has seen through this about-face and has any idea what lies at the back of his mind. A lovestruck Charlotte, thinking only of herself and throwing caution to the winds, goes to try and find him - just missing him as he goes to sea.
