Charles Dickens often dealt with the subject of poverty. In Victorian England, which is when Dickens was at the height of his popularity, most poor people spent a great deal of their lives in debtor's prison, and most children were forced to go to work in the coal mines, which were dangerous and unhealthy. Dickens was a social reformer."
