Plot Summary of Dead Birds Don't Sing
"Alex Masters is a former prostitute trying to go straight. When she goes to the bank to make a deposit for her employer she steps into a robbery and recognizes the culprits. She is shot by a stray bullet, and a fellow bank patron comes to her aid, attracting attention of the robbers. Alex is taken hostage and almost killed before the police come to the rescue.

Several of the robbers got away and the ones in custody aren't talking. When the police take Alex's statement they make the connection to the robbers and believe she had a part in planning the heist. Alex discovers that the man who came to her aid in the bank was a police detective, Cole Armstrong. She puts two and two together and decides that he is actually the brains behind the heist. When the police's main suspect in the robbery, a drug kingpin named Beau, is killed, the police are certain Alex is the murderer. Alex must go underground, literally into a series of underground tunnels beneath the city usually used for running drugs and guns, while she searches for proof that Cole planned the bank robbery.

Another suspected robber is killed as well as one of Alex's former prostitute friends before Alex can put the pieces together and realizes Cole isn't the guilty party. "
