"Detective Nick Michael daCosta had went to London to check on a lead that went nowhere. His boss managed to track him down and tell him his comatose partner, Chris, may die in a couple of days or weeks. He rushes fast to the Heathrow Airport, but lightning strikes the car and the car swerves off the road into the cemetary. The car impacts the head stone of Godfrey Woodbaine and Nick is flung through the windshield to which Nick thinks he's going to die in a cemetary. Nick, in spirit form, encounters Chris's spirit and Chris tells him that it isn't his time and he gets another chance in another body.
In the Dover Coast in 1810, Nick wakes to find himself in someone else's body, Godfrey Woodbaine, whose wife Anna saved him. Nick tries to figure out Godfrey's life and why Anna hates him but almost everyone reacts to his odd un-Godfrey-like behavior. Nick searches for clues to Godfrey's relationship with his wife. Nick discovers that Godfrey beat his wife, had affairs with Lady Robeson and used the Anna's money for the estate for his own clothes. Nick starts to loathe Godfrey and tries to make Anna see that he isn't Godfrey to which slowly she starts to see it. Nick starts to change things like breaking Godfrey's affairs with Lady Robeson, fixing the money situation and changing Godfrey's will. Nick starts to learn more secrets about Godfrey and Anna while he wonders if he can protect her from Godfrey when he's sent back to the future to his body -- because Nick and Godfrey are still linked to each other and in Nick's recuperating body, Godfrey fights to get his own body back.
