Plot Summary of Petals on the River
"Shemaine has been convicted of a crime by the grandmother of
her fiance. Shemaine is sent to a ship to be sold as a slave
to the colonies.

Gage Thornton buys a beautiful slave to be a nanny to his
son. Gage is a widower who, people believe, killed his wife.

A spurn women named Roxanne has been taking care of household items in return of hoping to marry Gage. Roxanne is very angry when he brings home
Saemaine.

Soon after Gage is falling in love with Shemaine, but will
she fall in love with her master before her fiance Maurice finds
her in America."
