| Plot Summary of The Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons |
"On a cold winter's night in 1968, after the electricity has gone out as a result of Minnesota's heavy snow, Faith Owens finds herself engaged in a snowball fight with 4 other housewives (Slip, Audrey, Merit, Kari) who live on Freesia Court. Afterwards, they return to Faith's home and learn that they all share a love of books. Inspired by Kari's memories of her mother, the women form a book club, later nicknamed "Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons" or AHEB for short.
Each chapter begins with a heading including the host of particular month's meeting, the book discussed, the date, and some additional information such as the reason the book was chosen or the food served. These chapters are told in alternate voices, reflecting the various hosts, and interspersed with letters written by Faith to her deceased mother. In between literary discussions, the women deal with many issues in the 30 years that their book club is active. Among these are children being born/growing up, homosexuality, sex, spousal abuse, adoption, hippie lifestyle, political activism, alcoholism, AIDS, prejudice and trust.
This book provides insight into the changing times of the 1960's to the 1990's in Minnesota. "
