Plot Summary of The Search for William Hunter
"   William Hunter, a young Englishman, has made 14 trips across the Atlantic delivering shire horses from Lancashire to Iowa by the time he is 25 years old in 1888. He is in love with Ann, daughter of Squire Taylor, but he knows he can never marry her because he is a second son and won't inherit the family lands. He can't ask Ann, a gentle well-educated girl to go with him to America where life on an Iowa farm is harsh and rugged.

Back in Iowa, he meets Amy, a lively fun-loving American girl who loves to dance. She falls in love with Will and tricks him into marrying her despite the fact he still loves Ann. They go to California where Will works for his employer's partner who hates him for his "fancy" talk and ways. Since Will is very good with shire horses, he soon is able to go into business for himself. They have a baby boy and are happy except that Amy wants to be near her family in Iowa. Will's business fails in the depression of 1893, and when Amy tells him she is pregnant again, he grants her wish and they return to Iowa. There, a second son is born and Will leaves for the west to get work since he can't support his family in Iowa.

Amy, at home with the babies, waits for Will to send her money to join him in the West, but he never does and, eventually, she finds another man who wants to marry her and take care of her sons. Meantime, Will has met with a serious accident, has lost his memory and is a wanted for murder in England. Ann hides him and cares for him until he regains his memory and sets off to try to find his sons."
