| Plot Summary of Neverness |
"Set thousands of years from now on the planet Icefall, Neverness (The Unreal City) is the hub of galactic civilization and home to "The Academy": a huge school for many technological and spiritual disciples. The story centers on Mallory Ringess, a budding Pilot of his order. Pilots manuever through a series of subspace/time tunnels, known as the Manifold in attempts to open "windows" near stars many lightyears away. The Order has been given a quest to find the Elder Eddas: the original DNA origins of mankind that can possibly link man to the Ieldra, ancient alien progenitors of the human race. Mallory faces a huge cosmic intelligence alone and then ventures across his home planet's ice seas to find prospective DNA in a biologically altered Neandrathal race. Galactic interplay, multi-planet contact, space battles, philosophical debates and intense political intrigue make up this story."
