"Asher Lev is a Hasidic Jew who has an extraordinary talent for art. As he recollects his childhood and teenage years (where most of the plot is spent), readers can see the differences between creative young Asher and his traditional father, Aryeh, quickly form. Asher's father does not approve of his son's hobby or talent, though with the help of mentor Jacob Kahn, Asher struggles to enhance his artistic talents. In a world that is torn between his father's conservative approach and Asher's genius, Asher must break away from his good-meaning though displeased father to paint--even if it means painting pure controversy."
