Plot Summary of In a Dry Season
"The remains of a village which was abndoned and flooded as part of a hydroelectric project become exposed during an exceptionally hot and dry summer. A boy, who cannot resist exploring there, discovers some old bones and the mystery investigation begins. Events which took place during World War II need to be explored, a difficult task since the old village was flooded after the war as part of a hydroelectric project. Reconstructing events from long ago leads to the doorstep of a celebrity and illustrates how the past can continue to haunt people."
Joyce, Resident Scholar

" Detective Investigator Allan Banks has been relegated to a desk job. All he wants is to plunge himself into a real case which can rescue him from professional tedium, and maybe even from himself. His empty life needs something since his wife left him and his son isn't speaking to him.

Then a local dried out reservoir literally unearths a body found buried under a shed in the once flooded village of Hobb's End. The body belongs to a young woman bearing evidence of multiple stab wounds and strangulation. DI Banks concludes that the body must have been killed and buried after the war, but before Hobb's End was evacuated.

An attractive female cop assists him in solving the murder, and maybe even rescues him from his emotional indifference. She and Banks piece together clues from the past in order to recreate the life of the young victim, Gloria, and what possibly happened to her. Someone who lived with Gloria, in Hobb's End, reads the story she has written of the events that led to the murder, and after, as a backdrop to Detective Banks investigation. "
