"Takiko Odaka had a son, Akira, out of wedlock - and over the objection of her parents. As the two of them face adversity together, she faces the question of independence, how to get real love, getting a job, and other things that become necessary as they go. Fortunately, only a few people actually despise them; just about everyone is willing to help. From Takiko's mother and brother Atsushi to Mr. Kawano (a young cafe operator and Takiko's on/off lover), as well as Mr. Misawa, a greenhouse operator who gives her her first real job, and his staff Mr. Kido, Mr. Kanbayashi and Mr. Sasaki, all will help her overcome the stigmas and obstacles that a single mother faces in a traditional society that often looks down on her ilk."
