Plot Summary of Dorothy Dandridge: A Biography
"One of Hollywood's most glamorous and tragic figures, Dorothy Dandridge remains an enigma. Donald Bogle writes a very informative piece on the actress, from her early days as a dancer to her days as a chanteuse on to her triumph as the first black to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. Along the way Dorothy suffers through several failed marriages, bears the sadness of a mentally retarded child, and deals with the overwhelming prejudice of America in the 1950's. Miss Dandridge's tumultuous upbringing is detailed expertly by Bogle, as he reveals her mother to be the force (and off times, the barrier) to the actress's success. The book concludes with the theories behind the actress's suicide and her legacy to the motion picture industry."
Reginald D. Garrard, Resident Scholar
