Plot Summary of Rain
"Rain is a smart young black girl living in the projects. She is very close to her family. She walks in on an arguement between her mother and father and overhears that she is adopted. A rich white family actually paid, who she thought was her real dad, 10,000 to take her and raise her. She is all ready tormented in school because she is not a partier like the other kids in school and she is protective of herself and her sister Beni. This news gets around fast and makes matters worse for her. Her sister Beni is murdered by gang members. Rains mother contacts Rain's real mother in hopes she will now take her. She wants what is best for her and feels this is her only way out of the projects. Her real mother won't let anyone know this secret but through a series of lies Rain ends up staying with her real grandmother in a huge fancy mansion. She is able to go to a good school and get a good education although that wasn't exactly smooth sailing. This a powerful story of racial issues and it proves that no matter what your financial back ground is you can still have troubles in life."
Sherrie L. Jones, Resident Scholar

"Rain is not the average American child. Growing up with an exceptional amount of intelligence far greater than her peers and surroundings, she is soon pushed into a world that is nothing like her own.

Living in "The Projects" with her older brother Ron, younger sister Beni, her mother, and barely there father, Rain learns to grow up quickly, more quickly than she should. And although life is hard, nothing compares to the night that changes Rain's life, the night that she finds out that the family that she has been living with for so long, is not hers.

Quickly Rain tries to cope with the fact that her family has adopted her, taken from a woman whose family shunned her biracial child. But living with the only family that she has ever known, Rain tries to block it out of her mind. This all works well until an accident buys her a ticket to the family that she has never met.

The story takes its turns and jolts when Rain is brought to live with people, not only of a different race, but a different social standing. And there are very few people around that are willing to accept Rain for her heart instead of her skin color."

Ashley Newbern, Resident Scholar

"Rain was an intelligent teenager living in a dangerous part of Washington which they called the getto. Their neighborhood was occupied by gangsters and other poor people. The streets were crowded by homless people. Rain lived in an apartment in which they called the PROJECTS. Rain's sister Benny was a party girl and didn't do well in school. Rain was so close to her mother, what she didn't know was that the woman was not really her mother and her mother was a wealthy white american. The leader of the local gang liked her so one time when Rain went with her sister to a local bar he was there. The gang members surrounded Rain and the guy approached Rain and kissed her long and hard. Rain ran, took her sister and left. The following day Benny went to a party with her friends and came home drunk and sick, with her blouse half unbuttoned. The next day she recieved pictures her naked in the party and she showed them to Rain. The message told them to pay the guys $200. Rain sold her watch and locket and took the money she saved. They went to this old warehouse and followed directions from the note. The gang leader approached Rain and kissed her and told her to lay down and have sex with him. Rain ran while Benny knocked his balls that he fell and moaned. Rain ran to the streets for help, found the police and when they came to the warehouse, her sister Benny was murdered and no one was there."
