| Plot Summary of A Free Man of Color |
"When beautiful and ruthless octoroon Angelique Crozat is found strangled to death in the midst of an opulent Mardi Gras costume ball, authorities' reluctance to become involved spurs Benjamin January to take on the investigation. January, a physician and music teacher (and the son of a slave), soon finds himself embroiled in a quest that takes him from the mansions of rich white planters to the huts of voodoo-worshipping slaves, and through the dark streets of 1833 New Orleans. However, when the dark-skinned January becomes the convenient prime suspect in Angelique's murder, he must act quickly to stop the real killer from going free - and ensure his own freedom and safety."
