| Plot Summary of Adam Bede |

"Adam bede is a talanted young carpenter who falls in love with Hetty Sorrel , a young farm hand. Hetty however is having an affair with Arthur Donnithorn, the local squire's son. Hetty is labouring under the delusion that Arthur means to marry her. Into this story comes inah, hetty's cousin, a methodist peracher and a very good eharted young woman. When hetty falls pregnant and follows Arthur (who has gone off with his regiment) Dinah helps Adam to find her, but by the time she is located, a terrible tragedy has already occured, one for which Hetty will be asked to pay with her life. Gradually love blooms between Dinah and Adam - both being people who deserve the love and a good hearted equal. A really strong story line following the classic tale of a poor girl seduced and betrayed by a rich man, but adding a few new details and twists."

"George Eliot always manages to paint a picture of nineteenth-century England that is both accurate and enlightening. Adam Bede is an industrious carpenter who supports his widowed mother, helps his Methodist brother and courts Hetty, a local dairy maid. Unfortunately Hetty is seduced by a young man above her class and when she becomes pregnant she is on her own. She runs away and struggles through the following months until the baby is born and the real tragedy of this story develops. Adam meets Dinah who helps Adam find Hetty but it is too late. "
