Plot Summary of A Wizard Alone - Young Wizards 6
"In A Wizard Alone, the 6th book in Diane Duane's Young Wizards series, Kit Rodriguez's best friend and partner in wizardry, Nita Callahan, has withdrawn from him in grief over her mother's recent death. When Kit is given a new mission, to help autistic wizard Darryl through his wizardry Ordeal, his dog and fellow wizard Ponch helps him. But the altered universe inside Darryl's mind is an attractive and dangerous place, and Kit may never find his way out without Nita's help."
Ashareh, Resident Scholar

"Kit and Nita, two young wizards, are the main characters in this book, which is the sixth in the Young Wizards Series. Kit is given the task of finding out why Darryl, a wizard in training, is taking so long to complete his Ordeal. Darryl's Ordeal takes place in his mind, so Kit has to join him there and hope that there's something he can do that won't cause Darryl to fail his Ordeal. Kit's best friend, Nita, would be a great deal of help, but she's still dealing with the recent death of her mother. However, Nita also has to deal with a possible alien that is entering her dreams and asking for her help. In order to help it, Nita has to learn how to get beyond her grief for her mother. She has to learn fast, too, because Kit needs her help if he is to survive his attempts to help Darryl."
Melissa Cookson, Resident Scholar

"Nita has just lost her mother to cancer. Being the oldest, she becomes the glue between her father and the real world. She must keep her family together. She also goes to a counselor at her school. In her grief, Nita unconsciously shuts out her partner in magic, Kit. As Nita starts to come back from her isolation, Kit gets an assignment.

Kit is assigned to investigate the ordeal (coming into power for a wizard) for someone named Darryl. Kit, with the help of the special powers of his dog Ponch, go into Darryl's mind, where Darryl is playing hide and go seek with the Lone Power. The Lone Power invented entropy (death) and all wizards fight to slow the death of the universe.

As Kit gets more and more involved with Darryl, Nita realizes he is in trouble through her many conversations with Darryl in her sleep. Nita also learns that Darryl is a special kind of wizard and anger can sometimes be a good thing. His unusual abilities can keep the Lone Power at bay for a long time, or can destroy himself completely."
