"James Lee Burke's “Burning Angel” features Cajun country and Dave Robicheaux amd
Burke is fast becoming “the” writer of the South! Certainly, he revels in putting
New Iberia and New Orleans on the literary map! Robicheaux is a detective in the Iberia
Parish sheriff's department and he is surprised when Sonny Boy Marsallus passes to him a
notebook containing many “compromising secrets” about his Latin American activities.
Sonny Boy is not your average Boy Scout, having been involved in all sorts of nefarious
activities, ranging from gambling to prostitution. Trying to enforce the law (as well as
justice, even if it is southern Louisiana!) is a difficult task for Robicheaux and for Burke,
himself. The author weaves his way through this knotty tapestry quite successfully, not
only in this book, but the whole Robicheaux series. (An added bonus, too, is that you learn
a LOT about Louisiana politics and its social and cultural dynamics!)"
