Audrina is a very confused little girl. She can't keep time straight. She doesn't know the year, her age, or why nobody celebrates birthdays. Her memory is very spotty. Her father makes her sit in a rocking chair that will fill "the holes". Her mother is in her own little world, and her cousin Vera, who everyone considers her sister, is cruel to her, and lies every chance she gets.

One day, Audrina sneaks through the woods and meets a new neighbor, a nice boy named Arden Lowe, who really likes her and wants to be friends. Audrina is forbidden to see him, but she finds ways to meet her only friend. But Arden has a secret. Once he acted like a coward and he will never forgive himself. Audrina has flashbacks of the first Audrina being attacked, and Arden running away. Did he know the first Audrina? How is this possible since the first Audrina was nine years older?      

Audrina and Arden grow up and marry, but Audrina has a difficult time with intimacy. Making love with Arden is like torture she must endure, and Arden frustrated with her lack of respose, is unfaithful with Vera. Audrina cares for her little sister Sylvia, who is mentally challenged after her mother died giving birth to her prematurely.      

After being in a coma and almost dying from a fall down the stairs, Audrina has a vision of the first Audrina. She demands her father tell her the truth. There never was a first Audrina. She had been raped by a gang of boys on her ninth birthday, and unable to come to terms with it, her father brainwashed her. Reeling from this confession, Audrina decides to leave Arden and her home, but who will take care of Sylvia? How will she survive?

Seven year old Audrina Adare lives with her parents, her cousin Vera, and she also lives in the shadow of her older sister who was raped and murdered before she was born. This serves as a remined for young Audrina not to wander around alone in the woods. Her older sister was named Audrina and young Audrina constantly believes that she will never fill the shoes of the "first and best Audrina". One day Audrina breaks the rule about going into the woods, and she meets Arden Lowe, a young boy who will become her one playmate and companion. She also becomes friends with his mother Billie, a figure skater who lost her legs in an injury. As she grows older Audrina begins to learns secrets about her family. For example, the cruel, manipulative Vera is not her cousin at all but rather her half-sister. Though she marries Arden, Audrina cannot bring herself to be happy, because she feels that there is a secret that no one is telling her. When she finally discovers the truth, she must come to grips with the reality of what happened to the first Audrina, who she really is, and how much damage a parent can do out of desire to "save" his child.

Audrina actually has visions of her sisters attack as if she herself was there.Audrina's dad keeps her out of school and close to home for fear of something happening to his daughter. Audrina, however, slips away into the woods where her sister was attacked and meets a boy named Arden. Arden and Audrina become close friends. They fall in love and marry. During this time Audrina is taunted by her past and cousin, whom she eventually finds out is her half sister, knows a secret that will lead Audrina to the truth about her older sister's attack. This book has many hidden secrets that are revealed as you move along with the story.
