Hiking in Appenzell
Appenzell is most famous for Mount Santis and the lakes around it, notably the Falensee. Unfortunately, there is no cable car that goes to the Falensee (there actually is a cable car that
goes to a nearby mountain that one can descend from, but the descent is so steep that one almost needs a parachute). Therefore, to get there, one must
go uphill, approximately 1000 feet. I did this and while the area is beautiful (especially dense with lush wildflowers), and quite nice... it wasn't nice enough for a steep uphill climb. But since you can see the photos below you can just look at them and don't have to climb yourself to see them.
The uphill part is in the foresty section. You start out in a small town called Brusilau. The trip back is really great, on
gently sloping downhill paths.
The hills around appenzell also make for great hiking, they are gentle, green sloping hills that make for beautiful hiking paths down to Appenzell. Unfortunately
you'll need a taxi service to get to the top of most of them and the one time I called a taxi they promised to come but didn't (I think they must have been on an extended cheese and chocolate break). I paid a local shopkeeper to
drive me to the top of one of them.
