Who's older--Tom Bombadil, or Treebeard? Message Board

Post to this discussion forum - J.R.R. Tolkien book reviews

When the hobbits met Tom, he boasted he was the oldest. And yet later Gandalf told Aragorn et.al. that Treebeard was the oldest. Which one is exaggerating?

Tom Bombadil is JRR TOLKIEN. Somehere I read a quote of JRR Tolkien saying that Tom Bombadil will remain as long as the west wins. It was WWII people. Tolkien would live also if the west won.

Tom Bombadil I guess. He was there even before the trees. Referring to the Silmarillion (chapter entitled "Aule and Yavanna"), the Ents or Shepherds of Trees came into being when the Elves awoke in the first age of (rekindled) Starlight. The Ents therefore would be as old as the Elves. But Tom was in the World even before the Valar entered in the Beginning of Time.

I have been seeking the answer to this. However, Bombadil does say that he was there before the trees and even before the rain, and Treebeard is treelike and drinks water, so....

Tom is older by far. He is NOT a Maia. This is apparent since Ring's magic has no effect on him BUT its clear from Gandlaf's reaction that the Ring will affect the Maia. It is not clear what Tom Bombadil's true nature is. He could be the personification of Nature itself.

Tom is older, if you go back and re-read the books, Treebeard says (these aren't the exact words) he was there since the first ent. TOM says he was there since the beginning of time.

Actually, I have a question...IF Tom was a Maiar, then why does The One Ring not have him under it power? It had Sauron and Sauramon under theirs, and THEY were Maiars? He could not be a Maiar, since he IS more powerful than either of them! Must be a Vayar

Treebeard is oldest becuse tom bombadil says he was here before anyone came here i think he is refering to elves and not to ents for ents were created by Eru on request of Yavana to protect her trees.

Tom Bombadil was a Miaer . Sauron was also a Miaer The Miaer were Immortal apprentices to the Valar. The wizards were also miaers. Sauron was the valar melkors apprentice. So the miaers are older than treebeard. They were around before the earth and the sun was created. Each one of the valar was part of ecu the one god. Melkor was the most powerful but the other 8 valar combined were more powerful. Melkor was evil and caused problems. He was imprisoned by the other valar but his apprentice Sauron escaped to Earth. Each one of the valar had different qualities. One of them was creating plants trees etc. Tom Bombadil was that valars apprentice. That same valar created the ents when the earth was created.
