| Plot Summary of Catch-22 |
"Joseph Heller's famous comic novel (number seven, overall) about Yossarian, a WWII bombadeer who only wants to come out of the war alive. It's a brilliant display of circular logic, and one of the funniest books ever written. The dialog is probably its best feature."
David J. Peterson, Resident Scholar

"Heller's terribly funny (and moral) comic novel set on a Mediterranean Island in the Second World War portrays all the contradictions, craziness, and stupidity of war -- any war -- and by extension, human life itself. Yossarian, a well-meaning but naive Everyman, wants to get out of the war, and tries to find some way to do it. A variety of weird and eccentric supporting characters make that difficult for him, but in a hugely entertaining way for the reader. A 20th century classic."
David Loftus, Resident Scholar

"Yossarian is a bombardier fighting in World War II for the US Army but his one wish is to stop fighting as a bombardier, in fact, to stop fighting completely in WWII for the US Army - especially as everybody is already out to kill him - or so he thinks. In trying to escape the rigours of military life, Yossarian begins to realise that madness may be bad but sanity, it seems, is even worse. "
