| Plot Summary of Northanger Abbey |
"Northanger Abbey is Jane Austen's response to the popular literature of her time, the Gothic novel and the "coming of age" novel. The main character, Catherine Morland, engrosses herself in this genre of novels, which thus influences her judgement and rationale. The meeting of new people and the visiting of new places, like Bath and her love interest's home, Northanger Abbey, overwhelm her, causing some irrational and silly thinking."
Janet Alejandro, Resident Scholar
|
"While spending a season in a resort town, an unremarkable young woman learns to mistrust her fiction stimulated prejudices and use her mind and heart, both on her own and under the hero's tutelage, so demurely and adorably that he is compelled to love her. They marry."
Kerry Patriarche, Resident Scholar
