The main character Ellie and her group of teenage friends are faced with tough decisions to forsake their own lives to help their families or stay in hiding. The series records Ellie's and her groups experiences from her perspective."

"John Marsden describes with great clarity the plight of Ellie and her friends when they realise their country has been invaded. They move from being 'just another teenager', to desperate guerillas, fighting for their lives and their country. Despite the amount of violence which occurs in this and the following books in the series, it is all very believable, and very easy to become engrossed in. Be warned! You will *not* be able to put this book down.
An interesting subplot to the occupation of Australia by un-named armed forces, is the growth of Ellie and her friends - they become self-sufficient adults instead of the school-going kids they were at the start. This is explored in great detail amongst the characters, which means that it is very easy to relate to them. The ages of Ellie and her friends are never given, although we are led to believe that they are in their final years at high school, nor do we find out the exact country which is invading us, or the location of Wirawee, their home town. In this way, John Marsden has let any person, regardless of their age and nationality, identify with the characters."

"A group of teens go camping and when they come back their town and country has been invaded by unknown foreign forces. This will be, as war always is, a turning point in their lives. Because it leads them not only to face the danger in living as hunted people in their own country but also to make the decision to fight it.
In this whole process they learn about themselves and each other, they learn lessons of life that some people never learn and they grow.
