Plot Summary of The Flame and the Flower

"Heather is a badly treated servant in her aunt's house. One day, escaping from an attempt of raping she finds herself hosted in the Captain Birmingham's ship. He exchanges her for a prostitute and rapes her. They will be obliged to get married because she gets pregnant and they leave for the United States where they start their life together. She's very scared of intimacy and sex and he is angry at her most of the time. Until she discovers that he is the man she wants to live with and she feels ready to show him her love."
