When Patience gets trapped in the intrigue surrounding a petty thief at the house party she's attending, things begin to look up for her and her brother Gerrard when Vane shows up and puts his investigating skills to good use.

"Vane Cynster is traveling from his cousin's home when a storm causes him to stop at Bellamy Hall, the home of his godmother, Minnie, who is also the aunt of Patience Debbington, the lead female character. Patience is on an extended stay at her aunt's home with her 17 year old brother, Gerrard.
Vane's one night stop turns out to be a long visit when his godmother asks him to help investigate recent thefts and the appearance of a spectre or ghost. Vane,a confirmed bachelor, not only is interested in figuring out who the thief is but also wants to explore his attraction to his godmother's niece, Patience, a confirmed bachlorette.
Vane and Patience work together to find out who the thief is and work to cast suspicion off her brother, who other characters believe is causing all the mischief. With a cast of characters that give the aura of "Clue", Stephanie Laurens manages to pull off another enjoyable Cynster novel. "
