In Terry McMillan's Waiting to Exhale the reader is introduced to four strong women at various points of their lives. Each searching for what everyone longs for: true love. Each woman experiences the pains of a new society that they thought they had left out of a long time ago.
This romance is a coming of age for all women, although centered around just African Americans,McMillan uses descriptive terms to convey emotions to all readers.
