"Rupert Avery "Roo" and Erik von Darkmoor are on the run after they kill Eriks half brother Stefan von Darkmoor, a nobleman who raped Erik's sweetheart Rosalyn. They are captured and sentenced to death but get a last minute reprieve on the condition that they work as mercenaries for the legendary Eagle of Krondor, Calis. They undergo a strict training regime under Calis's sergeant Bobby de Loungville, then head out to the distant land of Novindus, stopping off at sorcerer's isle first where they pick up Nakor, a powerful magician who insists that his spells are merely tricks. They join up with the mercenary army in Novindus to discover its purpose. The group of mercenaries then escape to relay their information back to their homeland but first they must thwart their enemies planc to take a city rich in boat building yards to transport their army across the water to Midkemia."
