"This book is set in communist Russia throughout the blockade of Leningrad in the 1940's (WW2). It is about a young girl, Tatiana, her family and her lover, Alexander. This novel involves a great deal of history and romance. It is emotional, though provoking and has a storyline so great, it keeps you up until the early hours of the morning reading it!"
Jacqui, Resident Scholar

"Tatiana Metanova is a 17-year-old girl sharing a communal apartment with her family when Germany declares war on the Soviet Union in 1941. It is on this summer's day that she meets Alexander, a dashing lieutenant in the Red Army, when he spots her eating an icecream on a bench. Their eyes meet, and it is love at first sight.

However, Alexander and Tatiana's love must overcome many obstacles, including Tatiana's much beloved sister, Dasha, Alexander's best friend, Dimitri, and the siege of Leningrad.

As the Germans block all access to the city of Leningrad, food becomes scarce and it is a struggle to survive the harsh winter for Tatiana and her family. But with Alexander's love, Tatiana somehow manages to keep going, despite the famine and death all around her.
