| Plot Summary of The Man Who Died |
"Lawrence wrote this odd little novel late in his life. It concerns the activities of Jesus after he returns from the dead. His spiritual mission over, he is now free to live his life as an ordinary man. He travels south to Egypt, meets a priestess from the temple of Isis, and links his life to hers. The book was originally titled "The Escaped Cock" -- a reference to a tethered rooster in the yard where Jesus recovers from death. The man identifies with the bird as it struggles and finally breaks free and flies over the wall."
David Loftus, Resident Scholar
