For many different reasons, Sydney Teague needs to escape her Charlotte home. She travels to Garden City, South Carolina, a place that has fond childhood and adult memories. Sidney moves into her deceased uncle's condo in the Dunes End complex. Her plan is simply to enjoy quiet time, mostly fishing. Holding her aunt's proxy, Sydney also will vote on some homeowner issues.
While Sydney is fishing, two rednecks accost her until she is forced to knife one of them. When she returns to Dunes End, she hears shots fired and immediately notices a dead man on the shuffleboard court. She hurries upstairs to call the police, but by the time they arrive, there is no corpse or other evidence to back up her story. At the homeowner's meeting, the CEO uses Gestapo techniques to coerce everyone except Sydney into selling their property to Swamp Fox Chemical. Sydney risks her life to find out why Swamp Fox needs to acquire Dunes End.
This novel introduces the new, improved, and more likable Sydney Teague, a woman well aware of her addictions, but no longer brooding over them. Sydney does what she believes needs to be done. Thus she shows a moral strength and sense of duty that few people possess. This actually adds to the believability of the character, which in turn gives credence to of the well executed mystery. In VOICES IN THE SAND, Anne Underwood Grant has written a one sitting page-turner that charms the audience form start to finish.
