| Plot Summary of The Irish Bride |
"Sir Nicholas Kirwan returns from the Battle of Waterloo to find that his father has gambled away almost all of the family fortune. His mother's health is indifferent and he has 2 sister of marriagable age to dower. He finds that he must marry an heiress. A friend of his tells him of a beautiful but empty headed younger daughter that he wants to marry. The problem is that her father will not let her marry until the older daughter is married. The father of the 2 sisters is in trade but wealthy. Would Nick be interested?
Rietta Ferris, the older sister, is not as beautiful as her younger sister, Blanche, but she is difinitely more intelligent. She handles the finances of her father's business extremely well. She is also used to young men warming up to her to get to her younger sister. She wants only to marry for love but no longer believes a man will love her for herself.
Nick spends a few minutes with the two sisters and discovers that he craves Rietta. He is definitely drawn to her for herself but he honestly does not believe in love and she knows it. He allows her father to trick her into marrying him after he proposes and she refuses him twice. Now he has to prove to her that he is worthy of her love and trust. In the process her finds that he loved her all along and just didn't know it."
