"Kinsey Millhone is visited by Janice Kepler, a woman who has not been able to get over the death of her daughter, Lorna, who died 10 months earlier in the cabin where she lived. Janice wants to know if her daughter was murdered. The coroner was not able to determine what happened to Lorna, since her body was not discovered for approximately two weeks and was therefore badly decomposed. The police found no clues that Lorna was murdered.
Kinsey finds out that Lorna Kepler had been young and beautiful but lived a dangerous life as an independent prostitute and was even in a porn film. Kinsey talks to and investigates Lorna's family, friends, and former employers to try to find out whether Lorna was murdered and why.
