"Rebecca Lester has been a rebel growing up at Colorado. Her rich father indulges her. She also fantasizes about Nick Avery, her father's bodyguard. But when her father has died from a plane crash, her world falls apart. One morning she wakes up to find her father's lawyer's body beside her. Believing that someone is framing her for his murder, Rebecca runs away fearing that if she stays the town's police will imprison her.
She goes to New York and completely changes her image and identity. She sets up a profitable bodyguard/security business that she manages well. She never lost her sense of caution although it has been five years already since the murder. When she has been shopping one day, she senses that someone is following her. She becomes frightened thinking the real murderer is out to get her. She decides to get outside help. She hires Nick Avery, who is in Manhattan also, to protect her from the stalker. She doesn't tell Nick her real identity or the reason why she has hired him. But eventually she confesses to Nick that her father's lawyer has been murdered and set in a way to frame her up with the murder, and the murderer is out to get her next. Nick is stunned to find Rebecca in New York. He has been searching for her when she has suddenly disappeared in Colorado 5 years ago. He is angry at Rebecca for not going to him for help when she has woken to find a dead body beside her. His long-time attraction to her doesn't fade away also. And Rebecca seems to reciprocate the attraction. They get into a relationship while solving the case behind Rebecca's stalker. When the stalker makes mention about her father, Rebecca is determined to meet with him/her. She still believes that her father is still alive after all these years. But the person she sees in the rendezvous point is someone who works in their house. Both Rebecca and Nick follow the clues from there. They find the person she has met with dead and it links the person to her mentally ill brother. And when it suddenly dawns on Rebecca that it has been Samuel's doing all along, a note addresses to her tells her to meet with somebody so that everything will be revealed to her. Both Nick and Rebecca go to the meeting place and there she sees that her father's wife, her stepmother, and her cohort were behind all the murders. They want her dead too so they can get all the wealth of her father and from her trust fund. Now that they have fallen into their trap, Nick and Rebecca stall for time and find a way to escape death.
