Plot Summary of Man of My Dreams
"Beautiful Megan Penworthy wants to marry the Duke of Wrothson after receiving a humiliating cut direct from Lady Ophelia Thackeray, the woman who possesses the loftiest title in their neighborhood. When horsebreeder Devlin Jeffery suddenly appears in their home, Megan finds Devlin exasperating and antagonizes him every time they meet. She constantly points out his lack of breeding and boasts to him that she'll marry a great titled man. Despite her negative feelings for him, she can't help but be drawn to Devlin's oozing sex appeal.
Devlin is actually Ambrose St. James, duke of Wrothston, who suddenly needs to hide in the countryside for his bestfriend is seeking to murder him after he is accused of seducing his friend's sister. Disguising himself as horsebreeder at the Penworthy's household, he enjoys the change in his lifestyle, where he can be free with his thoughts without anybody saying something about it and he can spend his time without worries of his responsibilities. He is also attracted to Megan and loves to spar words with her. He knows Megan wants to marry the duke of Wrothston and he discourages her telling her that the duke won't be attracted to her beauty and that he is a rake.
But one drunken event, the two make love and Megan finds herself pregnant weeks later. They elope and get married hastily all the while Megan is bemoaning the fact that she won't be able to upstage Lady Ophelia now that she is only to be married to a poor horsebreeder. It comes shocking to her only later when she finds out that Devlin is actually the duke. She is furious at Devlin believing he has been making fun of her all along. Despite the rocky start of their marriage, they find themselves strongly attracted to each other and try to hold onto that to make their marriage work. Only with being honest and telling each other “I love you” do they finally realize how perfect they are for one another.
