| Plot Summary of Into the Woods |
"The book follows Grace from age 14 until her early 20's. She grows up in a military system as her father is a Lieutenant. Prior to the book, the family has moved around often. The story begins in Virginia where her father has started a new job as a pilot. Grace struggles with leaving old friends and finding ways to fit in with other non-military people. This is difficult for her and she seems to always find the odd people to connect with and is then ignored or worse from the main group of kids.
Her father dies from an accident and she and her mother are forced to move to Florida. Grace goes through her same difficulties with friends and being alone. Her mother changes from a military wife to a citizen. Grace is loved by adults and treated badly by peers so she isolates and connects with her mother's boyfriends and husbands.
Several deaths and losses continue to assualt Grace as she grows into adulthood. Her intelligence is high but social skills are low and she begins to suffer from hallucinations. She is later raped by one of her mother's husbands and that leads her to a suicide attempt. She is admitted to a long term care facility where she meets Dr. De Beers. "
