| Plot Summary of A Time to Embrace |
"This book is a sequel to A Time to Dance.
Abby and John Reynolds almost divorced last year. But they put their marriage back together and are closer than ever. John is a teacher and football coach at the local high school. Abby is a freelance writer.
John is under verbal attack from parents at the school where he coaches. Most fathers believe that the team is losing their games because their sons are not being allowed to play enough in the football games. They accuse John of allowing the kids to have car races late at night and letting the kids drink alcohol at parties. Chuck Parker, one of the parents is turning people against John, one by one in hopes of making him resign.
Late one night, two of the football players (Jake Daniels and Casey Parker) are out racing cars by the school in order to settle an argument. Imagine their shock when one of them hits "Coach" Reynolds' truck at high speed. Suddenly, their mentor's life is at stake.
Throughout the rest of the book, each character has their own struggle. John deals with paralysis and the fact that he will never walk again. He also deals with forgiving Jake, the young man who hit him.
Abby struggles as she remembers her once-atheltic husband and seeks to learn how to care for him now that he is wheelchair bound.
Jake is forced to face the consequences of his actions in court and on a personal level. John Reynolds had been more than his coach - he had been his mentor and almost a second father.
Casey & Chuck Parker must face up to their attitudes and actions towards John. Chuck finds himself shaken over his actions as he realizes what he has done to hurt John Reynolds and seeks to make things right by contacting those he influenced before.
In addition to all these things, John's family deals with additional struggles. Their newly-married daughter, Nicole struggles with an unexpected pregnancy and her anger about it. Their oldest son, Kade, deals with his addiction to pornography.
Karen Kingsbury weaves all of these situations together to bring them to a climax in John's hospital room.
