Plot Summary of Unicorns in the Rain
"Nikki, age 18, is riding on a train to go visit her grandmother, when a mysterious, attractive man named Sam sits down beside her and starts talking to her. They have a good conversation, even though Sam says confusing things, such as that he was going to law school and dropped out, and gives Nikki only a vague reason. However, since Nikki believes her grandmother doesn't really care whether she shows up, and only agreed to let Nikki stay so that Nikki's mother could go on vacation with yet another boyfriend, when Sam invites Nikki to come eat supper with him and his family, she says yes. They depart the train together at a train station farther down the line, and Sam's brother drives them home.

Sam's home is big and beautiful, and the meal that is prepared by his mother and sister-in-law is wonderful, but Nikki doesn't understand the main thing the family keeps talking about because they leave out much information in her presence. This confuses Nikki and makes her nervous. They tell her that Sam is the one who needs to tell her what is going on.

When Nikki awakens the next day, rain is falling heavily. That morning, Sam shows Nikki all the animals that the family has, which Sam says the family has been supplying to zoos and amusement parks and such. Nikki is particularly drawn to two unicorns, a male and a female together in a pen. She notices that the female unicorn is distressed, and concludes that the female has a foal that she had to leave behind when she was captured. This upsets Nikki.

When Nikki finds out that Sam's family has built a giant ark and they believe they must board it to survive a flood that will wipe out mankind, Nikki thinks they are all crazy, but on the chance that the family is not crazy, she thinks that Sam wants her with him on the ark for the wrong reasons. Nikki decides to run away; however, since it has been raining so heavily for some time, the roads are impassible for vehicles, and Nikki doesn't know where she can go.
